Top 3 Potential Chelsea Summer Signings
Following arguably Chelsea's most successful season, the Blues have struggled somewhat this term. Of course, that was always going to happen after attempting to replace their entire team in such a short period, as well as sacking club favourite Roberto Di Matteo; despite the Italian winning the Champions League and FA Cup last season.
However, Chelsea fans will of acknowledged that the current squad's quality is a match for any in Europe, which means Chelsea do not need any drastic changes this summer. However, as always with Chelsea and Abramovich – we can expect big movement this summer.
Here we have 3 players who could arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.
Radamel Falcao – Atletico Madrid - £48million
It would be rude not to start with the Atletico Madrid star Radamel Falcao. The Colombian is arguably the most sought after player in Europe due to his explosive displays for FC Porto and Atletico. Falcao's goal scoring abilities are phenomenal, and he helped Los Colchoneros somewhat thwart an early title challenge on the mighty Barcelona.
Barca however have proved too good and his side have fallen behind slightly. Chelsea have been linked with Falcao since he single-handedly destroyed the Blues in the UEFA Super Cup last year, were Atletico ran out 4-1 victors.
Falcao has a £48million buy out clause in his contract, but could Chelsea really afford another near £50million pound striker at the club?
Marouane Fellaini – Everton - £25million
Everton's colossal midfielder Marouane Fellaini has been tracked by Chelsea due to his impressive form this season. The Belgian has been a pivotal cog in attack for Everton, but sees himself more of a defensive midfielder [see Sky Sports.]
"I think I am a defensive midfielder," said Fellaini.
"But the manager thinks I can play number 10, number eight, number six, so I play wherever he wants and I give my maximum.
"I prefer defensive midfielder because I know my job when I play there. More things are in front of you. It is difficult to play with your back to goal. It is not my position but the manager likes me there and I am happy to do it.”
If Chelsea are to continue their 4-2-3-1 formation, the Blues will need a more physical battler in the two holding midfield roles. Frank Lampard, Ramires, John Obi Mikel and David Luiz are all fantastic players, but lack the physical prowess Fellaini could bring to the Blues. He will also be joining up with fellow Belgians Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne.
Luka Modric has been linked with Chelsea in the past and its clear to see why. In his last season for Spurs the Croatian made the most passes in the Premier League and the most in the opposition half . Modric was a classy player for Spurs which saw him presented with a huge opportunity to join Spanish champions Real Madrid.
So far, he has failed to live up to the mammoth price tag. With Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira arguably the two strongest holding mid fielders in the game today, Modric has found it difficult to settle in Madrid. Unfortunately for Modric a price tag of $35 million should command a player become a regular, something which he has struggled to do.
Modric is arriving at a crossroads. He can decide it's not worked out in Spain and force a move—there would be no shortage of takers, and you can be sure Chelsea will be sniffing around if Modric wants to pack his bags.
There's three big money transfers the Blues could chase this summer. Fellaini and Modric could form an impressive midfield behind the three musketeers Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar. Whilst Falcao could come in to once and for all end the goal scoring problem at Stamford Bridge.
Abramovich may not be every Chelsea fan's cup of tea right now, but he could go along way into re-building his relationship with the Stamford Bridge faithful bringing in players of this calibre.
