Top 10 Champions League games ever: 9 - Chelsea v Liverpool
Published : 03 Oct 2012 14:51:40
Chelsea survived a huge scare before drawing one of the most entertaining Champions League games to seal a recent 7-5 aggregate win over Liverpool.
Guus Hiddinks team led 3-1 after the first leg at Anfield, but Fabio Auerlio's free-kick an Xabi Alonso put Liverpool in total control at the break. With a two goal lead, Liverpool needed one more goal to progress, into yet another Champions League semi-final.
However, the second half did not start too well for Liverpool. As Pepe Reina fumbled Didier Drogba's faintest of touches into his own net. Accompanied with an Alex wonder goal, all from 35 yards rocketed into the back of the net. Liverpool had to start all over again, 2-2 on the night and 5-3 on aggregate Liverpool needed to look back to the days of 2005, a similar comeback was needed.
However, Frank Lampard decided to get on the act and put the blues ahead 3-2, slotting home Drogba's intelligent cross. The tie looked over but Liverpool had one more final say. Lucas Leiva, followed by a quick Dirk Kuyt header took the game to 4-3 in Liverpools favour. Now, 6-5 on aggregate and the away goal rule in their favour, typical Liverpool looked like beating the odds. With one more goal needed Liverpool went on the attack, however, the inspirational Frank Lampard was back. After he converted Nicolas Anelka's pass to level the tie 4-4, a truly memorable game of football had came to an end.
All this, and Liverpool where without inspirational talisman Steven Gerrard. Who knows what could have happened with him?
Key Player: Frank Lampard
The Chelsea legend's brace all but ended the tie for Liverpool. With the away goal rule against Chelsea, someone needed to come up with the goods. Frank Lampard scored two goals to send his side into the next round, as well as earning a Man of The Match award.
