Another January transfer window and more claims from Chelsea that the window will likely open and close for them rapidly with the expectation the squad will remain the same until after the World Cup in Brazil.

Top of the list of clubs rumoured to be looking to strengthen their squads in the Premier League as they seek to win the title are Chelsea.

Nemanja Matic

Chelsea are expected to complete the signing of the defensive midfielder who is set for a £21m return to Stamford Bridge. The player will replace Kevin De Bruyne who is on his way to Wolfsburg according to the Mirror among others. Matic left Chelsea in 2011 as part of a swap deal for David Luiz at Porto.

The 25-year-old Serbian international has set his sights on a return and could feature when Chelsea take on Manchester United

Matic will be cup-tied for the Champions League but Mourinho hopes Matic will help Chelsea win the Premier League title.

Earlier this month, Mourinho confirmed he was an admirer of the midfielder, saying: “Matic is a good player. Currently he looks solid and is wise and stable. He is a player that looks very mature on the pitch.”

Kurt Zouma

The 19-year-old centre-half is being touted as a successor to the John Terry according to the Express with Chelsea among other clubs interested in his services according to his agent.

"Serie A is an interesting destination, as are Inter, for the tactical growth of the lad,” Zouma's agent David Venditelli told French paper L’Equipe.

“Of course he wouldn’t mind moving to the Premier League, hopefully to Chelsea, where he could work with Jose Mourinho or to Monaco in Ligue 1.

“There were other sides interested, such as Newcastle, but now it’s a three-horse race.”

Kurt Zouma is rated at being worth £12m according to the Mirror with Arsenal also joining the race to sign him. Zouma has been in good form for Saint-Etienne and his combination of strength, size and skill on the ball has drawn comparison with Marcel Dessailly.

Saul Niguez

Another player on the most wanted list for Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea according to the Mirror is Saul Niguez a highly rated Spain Under-21 star in the making. The 19-year-old Atletico Madrid attacking midfielder is currently on loan to Rayo Vallecano and has been a revelation in La Liga and now looks set to be snapped-up by a Premier League team.

Phil Neville of Manchester United’s scouting team was recently spotted assessing the midfielder among other candidates so Chelsea may need to act quickly.

Niguez has starred for Spain at every youth level, from Under-16 to the Under-21's, winning the UEFA Under-19 Championship in 2012.
