The Love Affair Behind Jose Mourinho's Success

Forget the witty Press Conferences, stranger than life metaphors and intellectual analogies. Forget the touchline rants, sarcastic applause and early handshakes. Forget the conspiracy theories, the rhetorical questions and the FA bans. Go even further and forget the charismatic leader, the emotive commander of the troops, the Happy One, the Special One. Above all forget the tactical genius because this constantly maturing Love is the key to all that.

Mr Jose Mourinho has for years now been in love with the holding midfield position. The wall protecting the centre backs, the workman steel in flamboyant attacking lineups. The one to put in the miles for the team.

He started out with Claude Makelele, a man whose efficiency in breaking up opposition play was unparalleled. The power shown in bursting through opposition midfield was certainly the blueprint for a Mourinho sitting midfielder. Next was Michael Essien who even added goals to the once subdued position.

Even with Real Madrid whose attacking flair has been second to none for years now; the defensive screen was probably at its strongest with Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric coming on a little later.

Jose’s return to the Bridge saw the use of centre half David Luiz as the defensive screen almost to emphasize his quest for a continued loving relationship with defensive stability. With Nemanja Matic, Mourinho seems to have reached the climax of this long lasting affair as he is undoubtedly the perfect holding midfield model. Like any other good relationship, a trail of positive outcome is sure to develop with many more trophies a sure-fire result.
