Terry suffers toe 'break' woe
19 Jul 2007 - 12:33:37
Chelsea captain John Terry could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines after reportedly breaking a toe during the 1-0 pre-season friendly victory over Suwon Bluewings.
The 26-year-old England captain, who has also reportedly agreed terms on a new bumper contract to remain at Stamford Bridge, went off in a pre-planned half-time substitution after suffering the injury.
However, despite the problem, Terry could play against David Beckham's new side Los Angeles Galaxy in a high-profile friendly on Saturday.
Meanwhile, after the match Terry revealed his optimism for the new season following manager Jose Mourinho's moves in the summer transfer market.
Mourinho has spent £13.5million on France international winger Florent Malouda, while the likes of Steve Sidwell, Tal Ben-Haim and Claudio Pizarro have arrived on free transfers.
"These kind of trips away are great for getting to know the new signings," Terry told the club's official website.
"They settle in a little bit easier as well. You can't go away after training and do your own thing. You are in each others' pockets, which is a good thing.
"Not only on the pitch but off the pitch as well, these kids have gelled well.
"We're a lot more prepared with strength in depth this year. If we do pick up the type of injuries we had last year, we've got the players to step in.
"The couple of seasons before the last one, we were fortunate. We had players around who, if we did have suspensions or injures, these players could come in and there was no real change.
"We didn't really have that last year. I feel as though we've got that back this year and that's going to be a great strength."
