Chelsea and England captain John Terry is to undergo surgery on a depressed fracture of his right cheekbone, sustained in the goalless draw with Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

Terry was injured during the first half of the stalemate with the Cottagers following a clash with Clint Dempsey and failed to return to the pitch after half-time.

Blues boss Avram Grant had said straight after the game: "He's going to have a scan and then I will have more information. We will have to wait and see.

"He didn't complain, he wanted to continue, but we didn't want to take the risk. For me if you have a doubt, if it's something in the head, I don't like to take the risk."

Terry is expected to be operated on on Saturday evening and is almost certain to miss England's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia in October.
