Terry: Pitch not good enough
15 May 2010 - 17:33:06
Chelsea captain John Terry criticised the Wembley pitch after captaining his team to a 1-0 victory against Portsmouth in Saturday's FA Cup Final.
The much-maligned surface once again appeared to be in a poor condition as Chelsea completed an impressive Premier League and FA Cup double thanks to Didier Drogba's second-half free-kick.
Chelsea hit the woodwork five times in the first half but were indebted to Petr Cech who saved Kevin-Prince Boateng poor 56th-minute spot-kick just before Drogba grabbed the crucial goal.
Frank Lampard missed a penalty of his own in the closing stages but it was the state of the pitch which Terry was quick to comment on after the game.
He said: "It wasn't good enough for a Wembley pitch. The FA have to decide if this is a football pitch or an events stadium.
"But to win is incredible. What an amazing day today. It was one of those days but we came strong and full credit to Didier.
"The reason why we are top of the league and won the FA Cup is that we are the best team and we have great determination.
"It's unbelievable. To win the Double has never been done in the club's history and to do it with this group of players feels so special. I thought our luck was out but what a great free-kick from Didier."
