Team of the week: Malouda on form again

Football.co.uk's Joe Strange reviews the weekend's Premier League action to pick his team of the week.

Goalkeeper - Ali Al Habsi (Wigan Atheltic)

After seeing his side concede ten goals in their opening two games, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez chose Al Habsi ahead of Chris Kirkland in goal. It proved to be an inspired decision, as the man on loan from Bolton pulled off a string of top saves to help his new team claim a valuable three points.

Right-back - Luke Young (Aston Villa)

Back in favour after the departure of Martin O'Neill, Young excelled at home to Everton on Sunday. He bagged the winning goal with a superb curling strike and dealt well with the constant threat of Steven Pienaar.

Central defence - Steve Gohouri (Wigan Athletic)

Two abysmal performances at the heart of Wigan's leaky defence had many fans wondering whether Gohouri was up to the challenge of Premier League Football, but he proved them wrong with a solid display at White Hart Lane on Saturday. He even came close to giving his side an early lead, rattling the bar with a powerful volley.

Central Defence - Richard Dunne (Aston Villa)

Despite being booked for a mistimed tackle on Jermaine Beckford, Dunne played well to deny his former side a share of the points at Villa Park. Strong in the air and hard in the tackle, the Irishman looks set to play a key part this season.

Left- back - Leighton Baines (Everton)

His side might have come away from the midlands with nothing to show for their efforts, but Baines put in yet another excellent performance down Everton's left-hand-side. He dealt with Ashley Young, Marc Albrighton and Stuart Downing well, and also got forward on multiple occasions.

Right-midfield - Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

A stunning hat-trick at home to Blackpool last week was follwed with another promising display at Ewood Park as Walcott continued to defy his critics. His first half goal was excellently taken, and so powerful that it even broke the net.

Central-midfield - Joey Barton (Newcastle United)

Bad-boy Barton makes my team of the week for the second time running after a battling performance against Wolves on Saturday. The central midfielder drove his team on and dealt remarkably well with a sustained attack from Karl Henry.

Central-midfield - Ahmed Elmohamady (Sunderland)

Technically he didn't play in the middle of midfield, but I had to fit 'the Egyptian David Beckham' in somehwere. His pace and direct running were a constant threat to the Man City defence, and his pin-point cross helped lead to Sunderland's winning penalty.

Left-midfield - Florent Malouda

This man just keeps on getting better and better. A couple of seasons ago he could barely get a game, but now he has developed into arguably Chelsea's most important player. Yet another goal accompanied an excellent showing against Stoke.

Striker - Luke Varney (Blackpool)

After signing on loan from Championship side Derby just a couple of days before, Varney was thrown straight into the action at home to Fulham on Saturday. The former Charlton man didn't disappoint, scoring his side's second goal and showing plenty of promise for the season ahead.

Striker - Hugo Rodallega (Wigan Athletic)

Heavily linked with a move away from the DW Stadium, Rodallega showed just why he's so important to Wigan's hopes of survival with a match-winning goal at Tottenham. His hard work and eye for goal were on full show at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
