Gamble: Ashley Cole could be back for the World Cup[LNB]Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson believes Fabio Capello should not be afraid to take a World Cup gamble on Ashley Cole if medical advice on the Chelsea defender's injury is positive.[LNB]Cole fractured his left ankle against Everton in early February and, following surgery, is expected to return in mid-May.[LNB]However, the 29-year-old, who is rated as the country's first-choice left-back, is still likely to be struggling for match fitness by the time England kick off their World Cup campaign against the United States on June 12.[LNB]Eriksson faced similar dilemmas when David Beckham broke his metatarsal before the 2002 World Cup and when Wayne Rooney did the same four years later and he has no regrets about taking them to the finals.[LNB]'You have to be in the situation of Capello to decide that, by talking to the doctors and experts,' he told The Times.[LNB]'It's important you take exact advice on the injury and whether he will getback in a couple of weeks.[LNB]'They (Beckham and Rooney) were two extremely important players and when the doctors said it was okay, I had no problem with my decision.[LNB]'Every case is different. [But] remember you have three or four weeks of preparation time at the end of the season [before the World Cup]. I leave it to Capello.'[LNB] Blow: Cole injures himself in a tackle with Everton's Landon Donovan last month [LNB]Eriksson also reserved special praise for the man everyone is praying remains fit ahead of this summer - Wayne Rooney.[LNB]The Manchester United forward is having a stunning season and has scored 33 goals in all competitions so far.[LNB]Rooney has easily filled the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo's summer departure to Real Madrid but Eriksson claims he is unsurprised by the 24-year-old.[LNB]Eriksson, who handed the former Everton man his international debut in 2003, added: "Rooney can play on his own, as he does now for United, so I'm not surprised by that this season. He is as strong as an ox.[LNB]'The way he wants to defend for the team is a strength and it is very rare for a [goalscorer]. I think he can do it all; he can run all day.[LNB]'Scoring more than 30 goals this season confirms he is among the best in the world.'[LNB] Roman Abramovich won't axe me: Carlo Ancelotti vows to fight for his Chelsea job Franck Ribery snubs Chelsea mega move as he prepares to leave Bayern Munich for Real Madrid or BarcelonaCHELSEA FC
