Chelsea defender John Terry has been ruled out for up to three weeks after having surgery on a knee injury on Friday.

Terry picked up the problem on Tuesday while training with the rest of the England squad in the build-up for the game against Russia.

Chelsea boss Avram Grant told the club's official website: "JT had an operation today and will be out for two or three weeks. Ashley Cole and Kalou are also injured.

"John tried his best to be available for the national team and then, in the last moment of the training, he got injured again.

"He needed the operation today and I hope that everything will be well.

"We have a big squad and we need to handle this situation."

Terry has struggled with a succession of injuries this season and had only just recovered from a fractured cheekbone when he suffered his latest setback.

Cole could be out for up to four weeks after picking up an ankle problem in England's 3-0 victory against Estonia on Saturday.
