Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon claims his club are in talks with Chelsea over the transfer of Arjen Robben to Spain.
The 23-year-old winger was reportedly close to agreeing a new contract to keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2012 following interest from German giants Bayern Munich.
But Calderon claims Real are on the trail of the Netherlands international, who has been in and out of the Chelsea first team during the last 18 months.
"We are in talks with Chelsea and the player, they are at an early stage but we hope to sign him," he claimed.
"Bringing Robben was one of my pledges when I was running for president and still remains the case."
Robben chose Chelsea ahead of Manchester United in a £12million transfer from PSV Eindhoven three years ago.
The former FC Groningen youngster has since made 106 appearances for the Blues in which he has netted 19 times.
Last month, Robben told Dutch media he was confident of agreeing a new deal at Chelsea.
He said: "We are close to a new deal. We have not agreed all details, but I don't expect any big problems any more."
