That the polling is completed in February is well established, but that does not explain the selection of Fernando Torres, whose best form has come in the last three months. Torres scored just five goals before February and was injured for long periods. Ryan Giggs took the individual honour despite starting just 12 Premier League games this season, scoring once, while Ashley Young's form has also tailed off after a fine start.
