Premier League 2014/15 Team of the Season

25 May 2015 12:11

So yesterday ended another season for England's top flight.

Chelsea deservedly clinched the trophy no matter how "boring" the rest of the league thought they might have been.

Newcomers QPR and Burnley tasted the horrible dish of an immediate return to the Championship along with Hull. There were also emotional farewells to long standing English legends Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard who depart to start their new challenges in the MLS.

But as always with any season there are the shining stars and below I state my 11 that I believe made the biggest impact across the season.

Goalkeeper: David De Gea

The young spaniard didn't enjoy his first spell as Manchester United's chief No.1 but this season he has proved to be not only United's most consistent performer but possibly their most essential component. His form has seen homeland giants Real Madrid take notice as they search for a long term replacement for legendary keeper Iker Casillas. Wether the Old Trafford hierarchy are willing to sell him remains to be seen, unless Ronaldo was thrown into the deal as well possibly?

Right back: Branislav Ivanovic

Normally overlooked compared to some of Chelsea's more expensive and silky skilled performers, Ivanovic is your no-nonsense wingback that doesn't do pretty but will always get the job done. The Serbian has chipped in with some vital goals this campaign and despite the odd moment of madness is one of Mourinho's most reliable players.

Centre back: John Terry

Terry is the good old-fashioned defender that wouldn't look out of place on a Sunday league pitch. Much like defensive partner Ivanovic, Terry has an old school approach to the age old art of defending that is very much needed but also admired in its virtue.

He been the rock at the back for Chelsea playing every minute of every game for them. This form also comes in a season where former and fellow Chelsea team mate, Lampard, controversially departed to title rivals Manchester City, playing less games than terry in during his time there. That subject mirrors former England team mate Gerrard. Not bad for an old timer, eh!

Centre back: Jose Fonte

Jose Fonte has helped steer the Southampton ship through a very successful league season when very few thought they would even stay in the league. Having their major players sold (albeit for good profit) and recruiting with fairly unknown players for basically bargain prices, all the while under the stewardship of a coach that had never managed in the Premier League, Southampton have proved all the doubters wrong, playing entertaining football and finishing seventh. They were also one of only two clubs to remain unbeaten against champions Chelsea. A huge pat on the back is in order for club captain!

Left back: Cesar Azpilicueta

Is it any wonder a third Chelsea defender makes up the defence after the season they had? Azpilicueta (or "Dave" as he's affectionately called by some, or they just gave up trying to say or spell it!) has been another major piece in the Chelsea puzzle. A naturally right-footed player, he has managed to deal with the almost south paw effect perfectly and sends shivers down the spines of right sided wingers all over the league. Like team mate Ivanovic, he was bought for less than £10 million, which in terms of the current market and what they've achieved, is a near modern miracle.

Right midfield: James Milner

Milner has really stepped up his performances this season and has surprised many with his season long consistent form. Scoring vital goals and providing important assists he has shone through when previously fans where calling him to be sold. He was rewarded with a return to the England squad the season and has proved to be possibly the biggest eyebrow raiser of this campaign.

Centre Midfield: Nemanja Matic

Quite possibly Chelsea's most important part this season. His job was probably the most unglamorous of all but he simply kept the engine running and the cogs turning. In what is a job that normally goes unnoticed Matic was picking up plaudits early on in the season which shows just what a job he was doing.

Centre midfield: Moussa Sissoko

In a season which everyone at Newcastle would rather forget, Sissoko has been a shining light, driving the team on as best he could priding the opportunities which were all too often fluffed by the forward line in front of him. His goal on the final day was the kick start Newcastle needed to stay up which was capped of by Jonas Gutierrez, who deserves the biggest award of all after his own personal battle.

Left midfield: Alexis Sanchez

Bought in the summer from Barcelona, Sanchez has been another ray of light in a season which has not always been pretty for Arsenal. The energetic Chilean immediately took the Emirates by storm with his combination of skill, never-say-die attitude, and of course, vital goals. He has well and truly cemented his place in Gunners faithful hearts and could even up winning silverware in the form of the FA cup.

Striker: Harry Kane

England's next hope of another Owen, Shearer, Lineker, etc. the boy wonder from Tottenham has torn apart Premier League defences this season including the notoriously hard to break Chelsea defence. Ending the season with a tally of 21 goals (equalling that of Sheringham, Klinsmann and Bale) he has well and truly put himself in the mix for future England contention and has been added to under 21's squad for this summers championship.

Striker: Charlie Austin

In a season which ended in relegation, Charlie Austin remained the sole perpetrator of QPR's hope of staying up. Notching up a total of 17 goals, the former Burnley and Swindon forward displayed the devastating prowess a striker needs to be a success in the top division. A robust, no-nonsense player with the added touch of skill to throw into the mix, Austin will not be short of offers come the off-season.
