Players' union FIFPro prepares challenge to transfer system

Players' union FIFPro is to launch a major legal battle against the transfer system on Friday with aims including reducing the number of players out on loan.

FIFPro is expected to announce a formal complaint to the European Commission and has called a news conference in Brussels, saying it will be a "major announcement set to impact the professional football industry worldwide".

Theo van Seggelen, secretary general of the union, told Dutch broadcaster NOS: "We have consulted with the clubs, but we have not come to a solution. We now have no choice but to go to the European Commission.

"We are not trying to blow up the transfer market. We want to bring balance between the rights of players and clubs."

The complaint focuses on competition law, the European Convention on Human Rights and free movement for workers.

Van Seggelen added: "Players, especially young players, need more protection. There must be a better distribution of money to help smaller clubs and we have to reduce the number of loans."
