Prior to Chelsea's interest of Colombian forward Jackson Martinez, I had little to no knowledge as to who the tabloids were linking every top club around Europe with. It was in fact a close friend of mine - a big follower of FC Porto - who first told me about the Colombian hit man.
The Blues are in the market for a centre forward this summer, with FC Porto striker Jackson Martinez seemingly top of the list. The 26 year old has 31 goals for Porto this season [ESPNfc.com] and has filled the void left by Radamel Falcao since his departure to Atletico Madrid.
Jackson Martinez is a player capable of scoring goals of the highest class.
As well as being victim to the occasional horrow show. *note he did go on to score two goals after this miss.
Jackson Martinez – or 'Jackshow' in Portugual – is just one of many strikers linked to Chelsea, with current forwards Fernando Torres and Demba Ba both struggling for form. Martinez is the cheapest option out of Chelsea's rumoured targets, with a release clause of £33million. Martinez's compatriot Radamel Falcao has a £50million buy-out price, whilst Napoli star Edinson Cavani will not be allowed to leave the Stadio San Paolo for atleast £60million [goal.com].
Portuguese newspaper Diario De Noticias claim that Jackson Martinez is not only being scouted by Chelsea. Liverpool, AC Milan, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund complete the batch of clubs who have observed and gathered information from the Porto star.
Jackson Martinez has 131 career goals in just 262 games, averaging out at a goal every other game. The Colombian scored 63 goals in 148 appearances for Independiente Medellin, 37 goals in 80 appearances for Jaguares and already has 31 goals in just 34 appearances for Porto.
Similiar to Radamel Falcao, Martinez has scored goals for every club hes played at. But for €40million [£33million] Martinez would be a risky investment for Chelsea, and for a player in similar stature to Demba Ba it may not be an ideal move. The Blues already have a powerful, athletic centre forward who is a proven goal scorer in the Premier League. Risking up to £33million on Martinez is not sensible business for Chelsea.
On his future – Martinez told Ojogo:"Chelsea and Barcelona? Sincerely I have not spoken with anybody but this is a good signal about my performances in the Portuguese Liga.
"Rumours are normal because I am working with success in Porto and scoring goals but I am calm, if the papers say there are offers that does not worry me.
"Now I am focussed exclusively on my work for Porto, I prefer to ignore the rumours about clubs being interested."
Roman Abramovich may feel a big summer signing like Jackson Martinez will please the Chelsea faithful after a season full of wax and wane.
Personally, I think the ideal striker Chelsea need is a player like Sergio Aguero or Luis Suarez. Now, I'm not saying Chelsea will or should put in a bid for the Argentine or Uruguay international – because of course it won't happen.
With the midfield duo of Eden Hazard and Juan Mata, Chelsea have two of the most dangerous midfielders in European football. Fernando Torres and Demba Ba are both powerful, pacy forwards who rely on direct football. The Chelsea midfield rely on intricate build-up play to break down their opponents.
Aguero and Suarez have the ability to drop deep and involve themselves in the midfield – allowing themselves as forwards to have a bigger impact on the game. Sergio Aguero and Luis Suarez will however be incredibly difficult players to sign this summer. Players like Stevan Jovetic and Marco Reus I believe would have a successful future at Chelsea Football Club.
