Coaches survive Di Matteo sacking

Chelsea have retained the services of first team coaches Eddie Newton and Steve Holland, Chelsea-Mad can confirm.

While new interim coach Rafa Benitez meets his new players at Cobham tomorrow, first to greet the ex-Liverpool will be Holland and Newton.

The Chelsea board have been greatly impressed by the duo's coaching ability and wish to keep the pair to ensure minimal disruption to team planning.

Steve Holland came to Chelsea via Stoke City and became reserve team boss in 2009.

He moved up to the top table under Andre Villas-Boas.

Newton is best buddies with sacked Italian Di Matteo.

The pair worked together at MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion.

Of course Eddie and Robbie will always be remembered at Chelsea as goal-scorers in the 2-0 FA Cup victory over Middlesbrough in 1997.

With Holland and Newton retained, the Chelsea board will hope that their appearances in the dugout alongside Benitez will temper any hostility from angry Chelsea supporters who will never accept Benitez as their manager.

First and foremost Holland and Newton need to perform on the training ground.
