Mourinho's summer striker purchase, will it be Costa, Cavani or even Mandzukic?

Chelsea fans will be hoping that the club’s transfer plans for the summer are somewhat more solidified than the media outlets are suggesting, particularly with regard to the acquisition of a striker. Over the last few weeks a few names have been linked with the club, but with each passing day, it seems a new name is added. So which will Mourinho truly have his focus on?

A couple of weeks ago, there was talk that the prime target was Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid. As well as the player being one of La Liga’s top marksmen, there appeared traction to the deal with the potential of Chelsea’s on loan goalkeeper Thibaud Courtois possibly making his stay there permanent as part of the deal, or misfiring striker Fernando Torres shipping back to his first club.

The weekend however saw PSG’s Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani widely linked with a move to west London. The striker has inevitably played under the considerable shadow of Zlaten Ibrahimovic at the French club, and although a record fee would be required to prise the player away from Paris, it’s entirely possible that Cavani may look upon the deal with favour if financial considerations could be satisfied.

We now however have a further muddying of the waters with Mario Mandzukic of Bayern Munich now also being touted as a possible target. The striker will probably become available in the summer when Robert Lewandowski makes his move from Westphalia across to Bavaria as he joins from Borussia Dortmund. Any fee for Mandzukic is likely to be in the £25million range, which is substantially less than the eye-watering figures that will be required to entice Costa or Cavani to the Premier League, but Chelsea need to be sure that whoever they get will be the solution to the problem that has existed since the exit of Didier Drogba.

Mourinho has hinted for a long time that there is a plan in place to resolve the problem in the summer. Blues’ fans will be hoping that’s the case!
