Mourinho to demand extra from Chelsea stars

Although many of the players at Stamford Bridge for Mourinho’s second coming, will not have experienced his modus operandi before, anyone expecting it to be an easy ride will have quickly become disavowed of any such belief. Double training sessions have quickly become the norm as the Portuguese has sought to crack the Blues’ squad into shape for the new season. Special attention is however to be reserved for the club’s ‘special players.

Speaking to the club’s website, Mourinho stated that "I always say to these creative players that if you have more than the others, you have to do more than the others. If you have this ability, you have to use this ability.” He particularly referred to Juan Mata, Chelsea’s Player of the season last term. "I have my idea about where and how he produces better and where he has more difficulty," he said, he went on to say that “Juan is the only player we have to (cut in) on the right, but I also think he is very comfortable playing a No.10 role [behind the striker], so between these two positions he has a lot to give to the team.

It was not merely a matter of praise for Mata however, Mourinho was clear that he expected extra from the most talented members of his squad. "I always say to these creative players that if you have more than the others, you have to do more than the others.”

It’s an initial approach that will inevitably put pressure on the club’s leading stars such as Mata, and Eden Hazard. If Chelsea are to progress to the level Mourinho aspires to, a full input will be required from the stars of the group. The manager is putting his players on notice that this must happen.
