Morientes doubt for Chelsea
29 Mar 2007 - 08:47:14
Valencia striker Fernando Morientes looks set to miss both legs of his side's Champions League quarter-final clash with Chelsea after picking up a shoulder injury.
The former Real Madrid and Liverpool frontman damaged his right shoulder in Spain's 1-0 home win over Iceland on Wednesday and could face up to one month on the sidelines.
That would rule the Los Che hitman out of both legs of their last eight clash with the Premiership champions, which begins with a trip to Stamford Bridge next week.
The second leg at the Mestalla on April 10 would also come too soon for the 29-year-old should initial estimates over the extent of the injury prove accurate.
"The shoulder will have to be immobilised for 15 days and he will be out between three to four weeks," claimed Spain team doctor Genaro Borras said.
"It is not the first time Morientes has had a problem with the shoulder."
Morientes has been in lethal form in the Champions League scoring five times in Europe since returning to Spain from Liverpool for £3million last summer.
Meanwhile, Valencia midfielder David Navarro has had the ban for his part in a Champions League brawl with Internazionale reduced from seven months to six.
Navarro was punished after breaking the nose of Inter's Nicolas Burdisso with a punch after a stormy Champions League clash with Inter on March 6.
