More injury woe for Carvalho
27 Jan 2009 - 14:25:20
Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho is expected to sit out the Premier League matches against Middlesbrough and Liverpool after suffering a hamstring injury in the FA Cup fourth round victory against Ipswich Town.
The Portugal international has endured an injury-ravaged campaign, but his absence is tempered by the return of John Terry who has struggled with a back problem recently.
Assistant first-team coach Ray Wilkins said: "Ricardo's going to be out for seven to ten days with a slight hamstring problem again, which is very unfortunate as he's worked hard to get himself back to a level of fitness required to play at this level.
"But John (Terry) is back in the squad so there's no problem there.
"When you've got a partnership such as John and Riccy it would be very pleasant to play them in every game.
"However, we're very fortunate that we have other guys that can come in and play equally as well, in Alex, Branislav Ivanovic and young Michael Mancienne - so there's enough cover there to cope with the situation.
"We've had a slight lack of concentration at the back that has cost us goals recently, and that's happened when John and Riccy have played as well, so we've got to sort that situation out.
"But we've got enough quality and enough experience to cover for those positions."
