Mega bucks kit deal gives Mourinho the green light to spend big for Chelsea

It’s the biggest kit deal in the history of football, overshadowing the 15 year, £287million deal of Manchester United with Nike, and means that any pressing concerns that Chelsea may have been feeling with regard to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play dictat have been assuaged.

German sportswear company Adidas have renewed their contract with the Blues to the tune of £300million over a ten year period. The new agreement replaces the existing contract, which was worth £20miillion per year, and reflects the club’s growing worldwide profile, thanks to success in the Champions’ League, and the return of Jose Mourinho.

Ironically, Mourinho may well feel the benefit of the Adidas largesse, as his transfer war chest will now be inflated by a generous chunk of the kit makers’ money. Add this to the already large amount promised to him by club owner Roman Abramovich, and the Special One could be indulging in some substantial retail therapy over the next few weeks.

Mourinho has recently espoused his intention to improve the quality of the players already in the first team squad, return loanee tyros such as Romelu Lukaku, Nathan Chalobah and Kevin de Bruyne to the club, plus promote youngsters such as Natahn Ake and Reubanm Loftus-cheek into first team reckoning. It would not be Mourinho however if there wasn’t a major deal or two in process, and this influx of cash can only help in this pursuit. With the signing of Andre Schurrle apparently already agreed, and Dutch starlet van Winkel also some way down the road, it could be a busy summer at the Bridge.
