Taking up Gulf: Mario Melchiot is leaving Wigan for Qatar

Mario Melchiot has rejected a pay cut at Wigan and opted to join Qatar club Umm Salal instead.

Melchiot, who also played for Chelsea, Birmingham and Ajax, signed a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old Dutchman turned down an offer to stay on with the Latics after being offered a better deal by the Gulf state club.

The signing comes several days after Dubai-based Al Ahli announced the signing ofItaly captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was also out of contract with Juventus.

Umm Salal finished seventh in the 12-team Qatar Stars league last season after finishing third in the previous two years.
