Manchester City to raise John Terry offer in final bid to sign Chelsea captain

Chelsea are expecting Terry to make a public statement about his intentions in the next few days and negotiations over an improved deal at Stamford Bridge are set to take place once the club returns from their pre-season tour of the United States. Despite positive noises coming out of the Chelsea camp, however, Hughes has not yet conceded defeat and has been advised by City's owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, to pursue the England captain, 'whatever it costs', according to a report in the Mail. Sheik Mansour and chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak are willing to back Hughes as he makes moves to break the British transfer record for the second summer in a row. Chelsea's owner Roman Abramovich is confident that Terry will stay, but until he comes out and publicly confirms that, City will believe they still have a chance. A second bid of £32 million was rejected earlier this month for the 28-year-old. Terry currently earns around £135,000-a-week though City are prepared to almost double that amount to get their man a figure that would compare favourably even with Cristiano Ronaldo's £200,000-a-week net at Real Madrid. Chelsea, despite insisting they would not be bullied by the threat of Terry leaving in to bumping his salary to such a figure, are nonetheless willing to improve their captain's current terms to give him parity with the top earners at the club, Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard. Aside from financial concerns, Terry is also believed to be frustrated by the lack of big name arrivals at Stamford Bridge this summer, in stark contrast to events at City. Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Barry and Roque Santa Cruz have all joined the City 'project' while Arsenal defender Kolo Toure and Everton's Joleon Lescott, too, are likely to follow.
