Lukaku takes another season out to convince Chelsea boss Mourinho
Everton’s signing of Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea could be the touchstone to ignite the Toffees’ season. It seemed certain that the young Belgian striker was primed for his first full season at his parent club following a season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, but Chelsea’s failure to move on either Demba Ba or Fernando Torres, meant that a further loan spell for Lukaku was probably inevitable.
The muscular Lukaku has all of the ingredients for the ideal Premier League striker. Strong and quick, with an eye for a goal, and a season‘s experience already behind him. All this means that it was an excellent piece of business by Everton manager Roberto Martinez to secure his services. With the misfiring Jelavic showing no sign of improving on last year’s disappointing form, Martinez was faced with only new signing Aruna Kone as a source of goals from his strikers. Now with Lukaku in the squad, he has not only a player capable of robustly leading the line, but one with a goal scoring record to give him confidence.
It seems likely that Chelsea would have been delighted to have offloaded either Ba or even Torres, and keep the young Belgian at Stamford Bridge, but with Samuel Eto’o now added to the squad, it made far more sense for the club to loan him out and get another season of regular first team football under his belt.
Should he have any sort of similar success at Goodison Park, as he did at the Hawthorns last season, it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world if Lukaku outscores the strikers that Jose Mourinho retained at the club. Should that happen, the chance of any further excursion on loan the following season would be remote indeed.
