With the availability of Europe’s top ‘on the market’ strikers diminishing day by day, Chelsea’s primary task for the summer, that of improving the squad’s strike force, could be argued to be increasingly urgent. Falcao has gone to Monaco. Cavani appears on the cusp of a move to PSG and Lewandowski seems to have settled for one more season at Dortmund before getting his move to Bayern Munich. It must be galling for Blues fans to look at the transfer speculation and see Arsenal seeking to tie up Gonzalo Higuain, and then reportedly bidding a further £30million for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, whilst the Stamford Bridge striker pursuit appears to still be stuck in first gear. Sure, there’s still talk of Wayne Rooney, but that’s becoming a long-running saga with a rapidly decreasing amount of interest as each day passes. Meanwhile, Mourinho appears content to sit on the reported rouble-packed transfer war chest given by club owner Roman Abaramovich. It may be however, that the manager has found his striker solution a little closer to home.
News over the weekend again confirmed the Portuguese’s decision to keep young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku at the club for the new season. Lukaku had a stellar season last term for West Bromwich Albion, netting 17 goals, including a hat trick against Manchester United, and it’s hardly slipped by anybody’s attention that in style, pace and power, there’s a striking resemblance between the young Belgian and Didier Drogba. Mourinho likes to have a strong focal point for his attack when playing in the Premier League, and Lukaku could be that guy. So, whilst big money target talks will doubtless continue for a while yet, it could be that Lukaku may save Abramovich a few million or so – unless Mourinho spends it on someone else!
