Lamps: No need for Owen
20 Dec 2008 - 11:46:09
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard does not believe Michael Owen is required at Stamford Bridge.
The England striker is currently considering a new contract to remain at Newcastle United beyond the end of the season.
The 29-year-old continues to be linked with a cut-price move away from Tyneside in January, with the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham, Wigan Athletic and the Blues all reported to be interested.
But Lampard doesn't believe his England colleague is required in a squad which already contains Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba.
"Obviously it's the manager's decision. Michael's a top player - he showed that with the goal he scored against Portsmouth last week, it was an unbelievable finish, top quality," he told The Sun.
"If he is fit, which he's struggled with a bit, he's a top, top player.
"At the right price, whether it's for us or not, he's going to be a good buy for someone for sure.
"But with Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba fit, I'd look at us and say we've got enough."
