Lampard slams fan attack
20 Mar 2007 - 08:43:36
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard expressed his sadness at being the target of a fan who raced on to the pitch after the Blues' 2-1 FA Cup sixth round replay victory at Tottenham.
The fan aimed a blow at Lampard before being dragged away by stewards, with the incident bringing a sorry end to the evening at White Hart Lane, with the Blues progressing thanks to goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Shaun Wright-Phillips in the second half.
Lampard told The Sun: "I saw the guy coming and wanted to keep my eye on him, because I thought if I turned my back I might get one on me.
"I just ducked and then the stewards got to him. I don't think he should have been on the pitch in the first place.
"You understand the emotion in a match like this. There is a lot of feeling, but we celebrated in front of our own fans and for the whole game we had taken a lot of stick.
"If you can't enjoy a victory in front of your own fans it's a bad day. People give us stick for a whole game and then complain when we celebrate."
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had earlier said of the incident: "A fan came on to make an aggression to Frank.
"I think the security people were not expecting that. He tried to hit Lamps and after that people catch him."
