Lampard hits back at Barton

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard has criticised Joey Barton for comments the Manchester City star made about England players' performances at last summer's World Cup.

Barton lambasted the players who had brought out autobiographies following England's quarter-final exit to Portugal.

He was also unimpressed by Sven-Goran Eriksson's insistence on playing Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the centre of midfield, suggesting they were unable to play together.

But Lampard has hit back saying: "I don't think Joey should talk about me and Steven. You shouldn't talk about other players too much.

"Unfortunately, I had six games where I didn't hit the back of the net and they were at the World Cup. It can happen.

"I didn't let my country down. It's as simple as that."
