Kenyon: Title race not over

03 May 2007 - 15:40:34

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has warned Manchester United that nobody at Stamford Bridge thinks the title race is over just yet.

Both the Blues and United return to Premiership action this weekend following Champions League semi-final disappointments, but it is the Red Devils who are in the box seat for domestic glory as they hold a five-point advantage at the top of the table.

Chelsea's fading title hopes could be extinguished altogether if they are beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday as United could stretch their lead to eight points as they face Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime.

But Kenyon still believes there could be a late twist in the title race with both teams still to play three games.

"Although it will take a good couple of days to get over Tuesday night's disappointments, there is still a lot to go for," he told Chelsea TV.

"I know results at the weekend did not help, but we have a never-say-die attitude here and it's not over till it's over and at any stage, Arsenal, Manchester United and Everton are three big games, even more so in the last week of the season. That is an enormous lift for the team.

"And then we have got the FA Cup final against Manchester United, and the first one back at Wembley, so as disappointing as losing to Liverpool is, it has been a great season.

"Yes we wanted all four but there is still a lot to play for. The team is getting better, we've got a fantastic squad, we've lots of things to celebrate and let's put last night behind us and go forward in the league."

Meanwhile, Chelsea players will wear black armbands against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge next week as a mark of respect for honourary vice-president Phillip Carter, who was killed in a helicopter crash on his way home from the Champions League clash with Liverpool.
