Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger shake hands at Stamford Bridge

Arsene Wenger accepted bitter rival Jose Mourinho's handshake ahead of the Premier League clash between Arsenal and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Wenger recorded a first win over Mourinho's Chelsea at the 14th attempt in August's Community Shield, but evaded the Portuguese post-match, when Mourinho was in position to congratulate his rival.

Mourinho waited in his technical area for Wenger to emerge and offered his hand, as expected, in the moments before the 12:45 kick-off and the Frenchman accepted.

The Portuguese followed principles which he has previously outlined after previous handshake controversies with rival managers.

"The moment I consider fundamental is to shake hands before the match, and before the match - in my house - it's my responsibility," Mourinho has said.

"I always go to the opponents' dug-out, or in the tunnel before the game.

"After the game, it depends on you, on the others. It's not a problem for me."

There is a long, bitter history between the pair, which reignited when Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge in June 2013.

Chelsea beat Arsenal 6-0 at Stamford Bridge in Wenger's 1000th game in charge and last season's home fixture for the Blues was a 2-0 win which saw the Frenchman push Mourinho in the technical area.

Wenger avoided punishment; had Mourinho been the perpetrator, he reckoned he would have received a stadium ban.

Chelsea captain John Terry was left out of the starting XI, with Kurt Zouma and Gary Cahill in central defence.

Branislav Ivanovic was restored at right-back, and as skipper, with Nemanja Matic and Diego Costa also returning to start.

Petr Cech returned to Stamford Bridge as an Arsenal player, following 11 years' distinguished service as a Blue, while Theo Walcott led the visitors' attack.
