John Terry injury scare, but he insists he'll be fit for FA Cup final against Portsmouth

Fabio Capello was left sweating on John Terry's fitness on Wednesday night after a day of drama at Chelsea's Cobham training ground. [LNB]The England manager feared his former skipper could be out of the World Cup when news emerged of an incident during training. It was thought Terry might have suffered a fractured metatarsal after landing awkwardly in a challenge with Daniel Sturridge. [LNB]Terry walked off the pitch but was taken to the Weybridge Diagnostic Clinic for a scan to see if he had indeed suffered the kind of injury that could threaten his participation in South Africa this summer.[LNB] All smiles: John Terry insists he'll be fit to face Portsmouth in the FA Cup final [LNB] It made for an anxious few hours for Capello before certain fears were allayed, although the England manager cannot be sure the Chelsea captain is in the clear until tomorrow when all the scan results have been received. [LNB]Terry left the clinic with a boot on his injured foot, but insists he will be fit to lead Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup final.[LNB]Mind your feet, John: Terry threw his boots to fans after Chelsea' s title win [LNB] Last night, in a statement, Terry said: 'I took a slight knock in training but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on my right foot and have a scan. 'The scan has shown there is no break and I am hoping to play in the FA Cup final.'[LNB]An earlier statement from Chelsea said: 'John Terry has today taken aknock in training and has gone to hospital for a scan on his right foot. He left Cobham walking freely in a protective boot, and we await the results which are expected on Thursday.' [LNB]Terry could have an MRI scan today to provide a fuller assessment of the injury. There is a risk that he has damaged ligaments, although the medical bulletins from Stamford Bridge last night were more favourable. [LNB]That will also be a relief for England kit sponsors Umbro, who pay Terry to wear their boots. He was seen handing out signed pairs on Sunday after Chelsea clinched the title with an 8-0 win against Wigan. [LNB]Capello and his staff remain nervous as the 29-year-old centre half has a reputation for playing with slight injuries. They know Terry will be desperate to play in the hope of completing a domestic double for the season with Chelsea, even if he could be at risk of a more serious injury. [LNB] England captain: but Ferdinand's season has been ruined by injury [LNB]Capello is already stretched in defensive positions, with Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King having to prove their fitness. Jamie Carragher has come out of retirement as one of six possible centre half picks. [LNB]Terry and new skipper Ferdinand are the first-choice partnership, but King is putting them under pressure following his excellent displays for Tottenham, although there remain doubts about his knee and the time he takes to recover between games. [LNB]Another concern about King is that he won't be able to train consistently, so it leaves Capello little time for pattern-of-play work with a back four. Manchester United defender Ferdinand has suffered from back and hamstring injuries and must prove his fitness to Capello in order to make his first appearance since replacing Terry as skipper, in one of the two warm-up friendlies against Mexico and Japan. [LNB] In contention: Dawson has turned in a number of eye catching performances this season [LNB]Michael Dawson and Matthew Upson, a regular during the qualifying period and the usual deputy for Ferdinand or Terry, are the outsiders. But with Capello set to take five of the six candidates from his 30-man selection, one of them could still make the final cut. [LNB]The left-footed Upson is the likely selection ahead of his uncapped rival. Dawson, however, has shown the better club form after Tottenham's top-four finish. [LNB]But Capello will want the experienced Terry on the plane to South Africa and will hope yesterday's dramas are nothing more than a scare. He will watch Terry play against Portsmouth to check on his movement. Losing Terry would complete a miserable week for Capello after the chaos surrounding his provisional squad announcement and the controversy over his Capello Index business venture. [LNB]There is also the threat of legal action from a Norwegian entrepreneur who claims to have presented the original on-line idea to Capello and his business partners while the Italian was on England duty with his players. [LNB]Yesterday Capello said he hoped his players would suffer no such disturbances while in South Africa - his concern being that some of them could be the subject of transfer activity. [LNB]'This is one of the problems,' he said. 'I hope the players who are with us in South Africa do not change the team or have negotiations. It disturbs the players all the time. 'You have to stay focused on the game and the competition.'
