John Terry and other shamed England stars - report

22 December 2011 14:52
John Terry is set to fight the biggest battle of his career, as he attempts to clear his name following the most serious allegation so far.

It has been a few years since Terry was adored by the nation and praised as a 'braveheart defender'.

His affair with the ex-wife of his former England and Chelsea team mate Wayne Bridge and the subsequent stripping of the captains armband made him a figure of hate.

After being reinstated as captain by Fabio Capello it seemed as though things were once again on the up for Terry, but that was not to be the case.

A clash with QPR defender Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road in October resulted in the England skipper being accused of racism.

With video evidence seemingly supporting this and the resulting charges laid against him by the Crown Prosecution Service yesterday, he now is hanging on to his career.

To be stripped of the captaincy twice would surely spell the end of his England career.

His sponsors Umbro have distanced themselves from him while his manager at Chelsea, Andre Villas-Boas continues to back his leader.

Terry is not the only England player to find himself in the dock in recent years, the ever growing list of troublesome players includes the following:

Paul Gascoigne

Admitted to beating his wife Sheryl in 1994, he did not face a National Team ban.

Rio Ferdinand

Convicted of drink driving back in 1997 and was then found guilty of missing a drugs test in 2003 that resulted in an 8 month ban and missed Euro 2004.

Lee Bowyer

Cleared of a racial assault after a student from Leeds was attacked, he was banned from the squad until the trial was over.

Jonathan Woodgate

Found guilty of affray for the incident Bowyer was cleared of. Subsequently banned from International football for 3 years and missed 2002 World Cup.

Alan Smith

Sent home from International duty in 2003 after being arrested for throwing a bottle into the crowd, he was never charged.

Nicky Butt

Arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman in a nightclub, he was never charged by police.

Ledley King

In 2009 he was arrested outside a nightclub following an alleged assault. He apologised and was not charged by the police or FA.

James Beattie

The FA allowed him to still play for England following his arrest for drink driving in 2002.

Steve Gerrard

Arrested in 2008 following an incident in a bar in Southport for assault. Allowed to play for England during the trail and was cleared of affray.

Joey Barton

Jailed for 6 months in 2008 for assault, not played for England since his debut in 2007.

Andy Carroll

Pleaded guilty to common assault in 2010 but was not banned from playing for England.
