Joe Cole will be next star to sign new deal at Chelsea, says Kenyon

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon says Joe Cole should be the next player to sign a new contract at Stamford Bridge. The Blues made only one big signing this summer, with Russian Yuri Zhirkov arriving from CSKA Moscow. Instead, Kenyon says he has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to retain the club's top players. Didier Drogba signed a new contract in the summer and England duo Ashley Cole and John Terry followed the striker's example by signing new deals to commit their long-term futures to the club this week. And Kenyon claims Joe Cole, who has been out of action since January with a persistent knee injury, will be next to sign. The England midfielder's current contract expires next June. Kenyon said: 'We've concentrated very hard this summer in retaining the players we have. Inevitably in a transfer window it is all about who you bring in but we shouldn't overlook who we have got. 'If you look at Didier Drogba, John Terry or Ashley Cole, they are world-class players that could walk into any other team in Europe and I am delighted that we have retained them. 'Joe is just back in training and we are all delighted to see that. We want and he wants to remain at Chelsea.'
