I played my best football for Liverpool, says Anelka on eve of Anfield return

The audition at Anfield amounted to just five months, a loan spell from Paris St-Germain that returned only five goals in 20 appearances. Yet Nicolas Anelka believes it was his most productive period. Little wonder no one will ever be able to work him out the enigma who has scored goals for Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Fenerbahce, Bolton and his latest stop, Chelsea. Gerard Houllier took him to Liverpool in January 2002, confident that Anelka could resurrect his career on Merseyside and be the catalyst for their first league title since 1990. They failed, finishing second behind Manchester United, and Houllier knocked back the option to sign the striker permanently. 'I played my best football at Liverpool because I played in my best position there,' claimed Anelka as he prepared for a return to Anfield for the Champions League quarter-final tomorrow.
