HATCHET MAN: That's rich coming from you Who is happy-talking Kenyon trying to kid?

Over the Blue Moon: Kenyon Peter Kenyon is trying to convince the world that Chelsea didn't buy success by having a good laugh at Manchester City. As the world's richest club failed to sign Kaka from AC Milan and retreated with all the grace of an elephant on crutches, Kenyon's message was quite clear: spending money well is not easy you know. It was the same line Jose Mourinho used to be regularly ridiculed for when he was Chelsea manager and Blue Peter deserves the same response. Kenyon is no fool, so let's call him a disingenuous opportunist. He must know that the situations of Chelsea and City are incomparable. When Roman Abramovich's tanks first started firing money at the game his largesse was previously unheard of in football. The club had just finished fourth in the Premier League, had recently won the FA Cup and they had already spent large sums on transfers in the preceding years. Chelsea were the sort of club where even in the late 1990s Ruud Gullit was asking for inflated wages. He may not have got them but the point is that Stamford Bridge knew what it was like to have money and success. They had a good base. City may have screeched a bit about doing similar under Frank Shinawatra but they have only been back in the top flight since 2002 and haven't won a trophy since 1976. Their new owners have also entered a market already inflated by Ambramovich's   riches. Former Manchester United chief executive Kenyon looked very smug as he insisted it was good not to be in charge of the richest club any longer. Bet he wasn't quite so self-satisfied when City beat him to Robinho last summer.     More from Hatchet Man...   Flash Harrys - Spurs manager Redknapp pinpoints his problems 21/01/09   HATCHET MAN: Villa boss O’Neill must try to help stamp out the two-footed tackle 20/01/09   HATCHET MAN: Pulis is a fool if he thinks only foreign players are the fall guys 20/01/09   HATCHET MAN: Grow up, City: Kaka squabble is embarrassing 20/01/09   HATCHET MAN: Hammers chief Duxbury may live to regret Spurs jibe 20/01/09   Hatchet man: Bellamy could have earned a season ticket on Man City's bench 19/01/09   HATCHET MAN: Go on Steve, put glum Gareth out of his Middlesbrough misery 19/01/09   Hatchet man: Blundering Bent does not warrant the Nugent treatment from Redknapp 19/01/09   VIEW FULL ARCHIVE     More...
