HATCHET MAN: Hiddink talks a good game but let's not presume he will be Chelsea's own Superman

When confirmation comes that Guus Hiddink has succeeded Luiz Felipe Scolari as Chelsea [LNB]manager the part-time and initially short-term nature of his role will be questioned. But few will ask why Roman Abramovich has turned to another international manager with only qualified success at club level after Brazil World Cup winner Scolari failed. The Chelsea owner's latest choice of managerial firefighter seems to have won universal approval, as if Hiddink is the sort of tried and trusted club manager who couldn't possibly put a foot a wrong.[LNB] [LNB]Centre of attention: Guus Hiddink is set to take charge of Chelsea on top on his duties as Russia manager[LNB]Yet his record does not match his reputation.[LNB]Hiddink did well in Holland with PSV where he won trophies in two stints, for sure, but Steve McClaren is succeeding there and the level of the game just does not compare to the Premier League.[LNB]   More from Hatchet Man... HATCHET MAN: Traore gamble threatens Birmingham's hopes of a Premier League return[LNB]11/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Cole call shows how desperate England boss Capello is for firepower up front[LNB]11/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Newcastle prove how to get it wrong even when they are saying sorry[LNB]11/02/09 HATCHET MAN: The FA Cup is becoming lost in the shambles surrounding the competition[LNB]10/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Desperate times call for drastic changes at Wenger's Arsenal[LNB]10/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Sven is the wrong man for Pompey in their fight to survive[LNB]10/02/09 HATCHET MAN: The vote of confidence means what it has always counted for...absolutely nothing[LNB]10/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Bennett's card is marked but his allegations are really no surprise[LNB]09/02/09 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE[LNB]  Perhaps his solitary European Cup success with PSV 21 years ago is enough for Abramovich. However, the manager's club record has been far from convincing since and the sport today is almost unrecognisable compared to 1988.[LNB]Hiddink failed to win trophies at Fenerbahce (one year: sacked), Valencia and Real Betis (less than a year: sacked) and the Intercontinental Cup win with Real Madrid (less than a year: sacked) is nothing to get excited about.[LNB]He has made an impact with several countries as manager but does not have the distinction that Scolari has of winning the World Cup and both men succeeded at club levels that bear no relation to the English top flight.[LNB]Hiddink talks a good game and is clearly a much better bet than Avram Grant ever was but let's not pretend he is some sort of superman who can turn Chelsea's ageing, fractured squad into world beaters overnight.[LNB] [LNB]
