HATCHET MAN: Chelsea let-off proves spineless UEFA don't have the backbone to punish Europe's elite

Just when UEFA's disciplinarians showed the early signs of some backbone, they prove they are as spineless as ever by backing down in the face of opposition from one of Europe's big clubs. Chelsea may be able to afford some of the best lawyers but convincing the governing body to reduce bans for Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa resulting from their reactions to last season's Champions League semi-final defeat is still astonishing. The striker produced a foul-mouthed outburst on live television which will live long in the memory after Barcelona took advantage of refereeing mistakes to overcome Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Bosingwa then labelled official Tom Henning Ovrebo 'a thief' and even though both apologised later, reducing their Champions League bans by a game each is inexplicable. Drogba will now miss the first three of Chelsea's games in Europe this season and Bosingwa the first two but the punishment does not fit the crime and the chance for UEFA to make a stand by clamping down on the bullying behaviour of spoiled millionaires has been missed.
