Grant satisfied by progress
09 Apr 2008 - 07:53:49
Avram Grant was more concerned with substance than style after Chelsea reached the semi-finals of the Champions League following a 3-2 aggregate victory over Fenerbahce.
Second leg goals from Michael Ballack and Frank Lampard overturned a 2-1 deficit to set up a third Chelsea versus Liverpool European semi-final in four years.
The Blues were far from at their best against the Turkish champions at Stamford Bridge, but afterwards Grant placed more emphasis on the result than the performance.
He said: "When you play in the quarter-finals, all that matters is reaching the semis.
"We needed to win and we did. In Turkey we played better than we did today, but the result was the important thing.
"We started the game well but we didn't carry it on and it got a bit nervous."
Meanwhile, Grant has set his sights on the final in Moscow after discovering his side will take on Liverpool.
"This is the first news they told me, that it was Liverpool in the semi-finals," he continued.
"The one thing I always want to know is the future. I don't know the future but we will do our best to be in the final.
"I feel good because our target was to be in the semi-final of the Champions League and we did it.
"I said that we could do good things this year. Now we are close. So of course I am optimistic and I believe."
