Chelsea boss Avram Grant is confident of completing the signing of Nicolas Anelka before their weekend meeting with Tottenham Hotspur.
The Blues had an initial bid believed to be around the £12million mark rejected by Bolton Wanderers for the France international striker on Monday.
But the Stamford Bridge club are desperate to bolster their striking options and have now tabled an improved offer.
Grant is currently without the injured Andriy Shevchenko, while Ivory Coast duo Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou are away on international duty at the African Cup of Nations.
That left the Blues boss with only Claudio Pizarro available for Tuesday's 2-1 Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory over Everton.
Afterwards the Israeli coach confirmed the club had tabled a fresh bid for Anelka.
He said: "We have confirmed our interest in Anelka. We wanted him for today and I hope that he will now get him for Saturday.
"If not we'll continue with the players that we have.
"We are missing three strikers so it's important to do something quickly."
