Grant backs skipper Terry
15 Dec 2007 - 08:56:16
Chelsea manager Avram Grant has dismissed talk of John Terry being removed as England captain following the appointment of Fabio Capello as national team coach.
Press reports had suggested that Terry's recent behaviour could count against him, but Grant insists that the Blues skipper is a top-class leader on and off the pitch.
He said: "I don't think, I am sure he is the best captain England can have.
"I am with John Terry every day and I haven't seen another captain like him.
"You saw what happened when he didn't play against Croatia and against Russia, not just as a player but as a captain.
"In hard times he knows how to bring everyone together. When you have a player who has a problem, John helps him.
"He is a great, great captain. You will not find anybody better than him and I don't think Fabio Capello is stupid, he knows that.
"If you ask the coaches and managers all over the world if they want a captain like John Terry, they will say yes.
"Everything looks good at Chelsea now but back in September we had problems and he did a great job for the team.
"Everyone sees he's a good player, but off the pitch he pulled everyone together during what was a difficult time. His actions showed he cared about Chelsea and not other things."
