Grant expects Terry to stay

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant would be "surprised" if John Terry left Stamford Bridge to join Manchester City and believes the England captain does not care about money. The Blues skipper has been persistently linked with the wealthy Eastlands outfit in recent weeks and City boss Mark Hughes lavished praise on the defender on Tuesday. Hughes also pointed out Terry is "very much a Chelsea player at this moment in time" but stopped short of denying they were interested buying him. "I would be surprised," said Grant, who led Chelsea to the 2008 Champions League final. "I don't know what happened since I left, I can only speak from my time at Chelsea." He added: "He was a very good captain and a very good player. But I'm not at Chelsea now so I don't know what has happened. "I don't think John Terry cares about money. You see how he is, he is desperate to win games and to do it in the right way." Grant, who will be in London for the third annual Unity Cup this weekend in his role as an ambassador for FC Unity, credits Terry for Chelsea's turnaround when he took over from Jose Mourinho in late 2007 - even if it was the captain's penalty miss which cost them victory in the Champions League final against Manchester United. "I must say that I came to Chelsea at a very difficult time with the atmosphere around the team, the image of the team, the results were not so good," said the former Israel national team boss. "One of the reasons that we recovered so well was the players and John Terry was a wonderful captain. I will never forget that. "I think you see people by how they behave in difficult times. It is the same for all of us, coaches and players. If you saw how John Terry behaved at that difficult time when I arrived at Chelsea - which everyone knows the situation was very bad in many aspects - you could see he was very, very good for the team. "But what happened now I must say I don't know, and it's not for me to say."
