Graham Poll: Riley in the wrong - Lampard red card must be rescinded

01 February 2009 21:55
Frank Lampard's red card needs to be overturned and Jose Boswinga should be charged after Mike Riley made some clear errors in yesterday's Liverpool versus Chelsea clash at Anfield.[LNB] Evidence: The Sky Sports video grab shows Frank Lampard making contact with the ball during his challenge with Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.[LNB] FIFA are against such interference but the FA get away with 're-refereeing' such incidents and, whilst it is impossible to fathom why they get involved in some and not others, after turning over Paul Robinson's perfectly justifiable dismissal for West Brom against Manchester United last week they surely must agree to uphold the appeal against Lampard's dismissal once it is lodged by Chelsea.[LNB]Seeing red: Lampard is sent off by Mike Riley.[LNB] Lampard actually hooked the ball away and contact was caused as much by Xavi Alonso's challenge which Riley ignored and apportioned the blame on Lampard's shoulders.[LNB]One wonders whether Riley is a regular Sportsmail reader and could perhaps have been influenced by Martin Samuel's article[LNB]on Saturday, in which Lampard spoke of his long-running feud with Alonso?[LNB]Riley also seemed to completely miss the way that Boswinga kicked out at Benayoun late in the game; a challenge which certainly would have merited a red card but went unpunished.[LNB]After calling for Keith Hackett to look at referees other than Howard Webb for clashes between the 'big four' and seeing him referee the North East derby well earlier in the afternoon, I would not blame Hackett for returning to Webb the next time a big four clash appears on the fixture list.[LNB] The truth about Lampard and Alonso - the midfield battlers have previous[LNB]Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0: Torres strikes late double as Frank Lampard sees red[LNB]Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0: All the action as it unfolded[LNB][LNB] [LNB]
