Frank Lampard pleased for Fernando Torres
Fernando Torres emerged from the pile of bodies a new man one with fewer troubles and a spring in his step, no longer bent beneath the burden of a goal drought at odds with his transfer fee.[LNB]The clock was stopped at 732 minutes and Torres looked ahead to predict a golden future for Chelsea, starting with a late sprint in the Barclays Premier League to put pressure on Manchester United.[LNB]'We know it's hard but we have belief,' said the ?50million striker after the 3-0 win over West Ham.[LNB] Mobbed: Fernando Torres (hidden) is congratulated by his Chelsea team-mates[LNB]'We're six points behind Manchester United. Things can improve. We have to keep winning. We'll see if something happens over the next few weeks.[LNB]'We've all seen how good Chelsea have been in the last few seasons. This season, they've played good football all the time but there was one period when results weren't so good. Chelsea are not just about this season, they're about being the strongest side in the years ahead.'[LNB]Frank Lampard experienced something similar to Torres when he arrived from West Ham 10 years ago. [LNB]It took the ?11m England midfielder four months to score his first Premier League goal for Chelsea. [LNB]He found the net once in his first 22 games but Saturday's goal against West Ham was his 168th in 505 games for the club.[LNB]'I was a young kid and a midfielder and I came here for a lesser fee,' said Lampard. 'When you're a world-class striker and you come here for ?50m, the spotlight is really on. I had a bit of leeway and a bit of time to settle but Fernando has not been given that. Nobody's made of stone and it affects you. It certainly affects me when I go a few games without a goal.[LNB]'You start to think about chances andgoing for goal, rather than doing what's instinctive. I don't know if that's been the case with him. I've seen him have a lot of misfortune ingames. He's been given offside and keepers have made brilliant saves. Even here he was almost tackled by a puddle.[LNB]'Butit's great for him and for us as a team that he has managed to put it to bed. He's got his goal and we can finally stop talking about it. [LNB]'He'sgot off the mark. That goal was a trademark one for him, pace and power. I'm sure he'll look back at it fondly in a couple of years because he is going to be very prolific for us.'[LNB]AsTorres noted, Manchester United are six points clear at the top of the Premier League. They can clinch the title by beating Arsenal and Chelseain their next two games but Carlo Ancelotti's team will test their nerves if they narrow the gap to three points with a win against Tottenham on Saturday. United are at Arsenal the following day. [LNB]'It'svital we win,' said Lampard, scorer of the opening goal against the Hammers.'We have to beat Tottenham and hope Man United slip up. It's a massive, massive game against a good Tottenham side. Our reaction has been great in the past few weeks but it's come very late. He can make an impact against Tottenham, he's that sort of player. Whether it's him, Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka up front, we can score goals.[LNB]'You need those boys when you are fighting to win a title. When the games are tense and tight you need your quality players to come through and Torres is certainly one of those.'[LNB] Chelsea's form has been excellent in the Premier League, dropping only two points in the last eight games. If they fail to catch United, they will not be far away but will reflect on a poor run of form in midwinter and the time it took for Torres to get off the mark.[LNB]'It's been a long time waiting for that; 14 games without scoring,' said Torres on Chelsea TV.[LNB]'Thanks to all my team-mates, because they were trying to give me the pass all the time, and for their amazing reaction when I managed to score. It was a great day for me.[LNB]'From my first day here, I felt the support of the people everywhere I went, even when we played away. All the fans were shouting my name and they were even more excited than me about the first goal.
