Former Chelsea star Di Matteo walks out on MK Dons to take West Brom job

Roberto Di Matteo is the shock new boss of West Bromwich Albion. The former Chelsea star has walked out on MK Dons to replace Tony Mowbray at the Hawthorns. Di Matteo won rave reviews in his debut season in management since taking over from Paul Ince last summer. The ex-Italy international guided MK Dons to within two points of promotion to the Championship before they were eventually dumped out of the play-offs. He has landed the Baggies' job after Preston manager Alan Irvine turned the post down. Sportsmail understands that Di Matteo impressed West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace at his interview. Albion, who are back in the Championship after finishing bottom of the Barclays Premier League in May, are desperate to bounce back at the first attempt. Di Matteo is set to bring his Dons No 2 - and former Chelsea team-mate - Eddie Newton with him.
