Forgotten man Bruma to return to Chelsea

It’s a fairly well trodden path when signing a young player to place him out on loan for a season or two to “gain experience” or something similar. Of Premier League clubs, Chelsea are certainly one of the main adherents to this philosophy, reputed to have almost two dozen of their players placed at various clubs throughout Europe. It can be a tremendous help if the player is successful. Look at the acclaim currently being given to Chelsea starlet Romelu Lukaku, as the Belgian has played a leading role on the successful season of West Bromwich Albion. Conversely, especially if the loan club is outside of England, it can end up with the player disappearing from the club’s radar.

One such case could be argued to be Jeffry Bruma. Now 21, and with four full Holland international caps to his name, the centre back signed for Chelsea in 2005, and starred in their successful youth team securing the FA Youth Cup. When Frank Arnesen left Stamford Bridge, and his position as supremo of the youth set up, decamping to Hamburg, he very quickly secured Bruma on loan for his new club. Two years down the road though, and without Bruma securing regular first team football during his loan spell, Arnesen as General Manager of Hamburg has apparently told him that the club will not be signing him, and he will now return to his parent club.

It will now be for Bruma to prove his worth at Stamford Bridge. In the short term however that may prove to be a more than somewhat difficult. Already vying for centre back berths are Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill and Terry. This means that even landing a place on the bench may be a difficult task for the young Dutchman. Should the talk of Terry’s potential departure next summer if his contract is not renewed, prove to have merit however, the situation may change.
