Over the past few days, a number of newspapers have linked Juan Mata with a move from Stamford Bridge, the story being that Mourinho was unconvinced of his ability. Talk was of a £25million move from Barcelona to take the midfielder back to Spain. Now, I’m not one to say things are wrong, but well, this one surely is.
When I first heard of the talk, surprise would not do the feeling justice. Here was a guy who has been the constant shining diamond for the club’s midfield and was deservedly in the final six for PFA Player of the Year. And yet, the story said, Mourinho “didn’t fancy him.” Having done a bit of research on this, people I trust to get these things right far more often than they get them wrong, tell me that they have no idea idea where this originated from, but are happy to pin there colours to the ‘no chance’ mast. Further, they go on to say that far from being on the way out, Mourinho is planning to use the diminutive Spaniard as one of the key members of his new-look Chelsea. That’s good enough for me.
Of course Barca would be interested in him. Why wouldn’t they? Unfortunately, as they say, it takes two to tango, and it’s a dance Chelsea do not want to get into. There was always going to be a fair bit of wheeler-dealing going on with Mourinho back in town, and early talk was of David Luiz leaving the club. Now that’s also a strange rumour, but one that will not go away. With regard to Mata however, should he not be lining up in Chelsea blue, for the first game of the season, come August time, there’ll be a few red faces for people who told me it wouldn’t happen, and I can’t see that happening.
