Arsene Wenger's 1,000th game in charge turned into a nightmare as Arsenal were ripped apart by a rampant Chelsea. Four goals up at half-time, the victory was Jose Mourinho's biggest in the Premier League and all-but ended Arsenal's lingering hopes of winning the title. The match was also notable for a case of mistaken identity as referee Andre Marriner sent off Kieran Gibbs after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had handled the ball on the line.

The teams' most thrilling Premier League meeting witnessed Robin van Persie score a hat-trick to inspire Arsenal to victory at Stamford Bridge. John Terry, facing allegations of racial abuse against QPR's Anton Ferdinand, had put Chelsea 2-1 up before half-time but it was his slip that allowed Van Persie to give the Gunners a 4-3 lead with five minutes to play. It was a humiliating defeat for the Blues and their boss Andre Villas-Boas, who would be sacked later in the season.

Both sides were licking their wounds after midweek exits in the Champions League semi-finals but it was Chelsea who bounced back with a convincing win at the Emirates Stadium. There had been hope Arsenal could catch Chelsea and finish third in the table but goals from Alex, Nicolas Anelka, Kolo Toure (own goal) and Florent Malouda secured the Blues direct entry into the Champions League and left Arsenal contemplating another fourth-place finish.

Arsenal came from two goals down to seal a remarkable win but the match will always be remembered for Kanu's 15-minute hat-trick, which culminated with a stunning stoppage-time winner. Chelsea goalkeeper Ed de Goey rushed out wide to close down the Nigerian, who sidestepped the Dutchman on the goal-line before curling the ball into the far corner of the net. Arsenal went on to finish second in the Premier League, behind Manchester United.

A feisty meeting produced an unlikely hero as Nigel Winterburn's long-range rocket in the 89th minute sealed Arsenal victory. The left-back picked the ball up 40 yards out and unleashed a driving shot into the top right-hand corner to snatch all three points for the Gunners. Chelsea's Frank Leboeuf had earlier been sent off in the game, which saw Dennis Bergkamp score twice, with Gianfranco Zola and Gustavo Poyet also on the scoresheet.
