Five-month suspended sentence sought for Makelele

French prosecutors will seek a five-month suspended prison sentence for former French international footballer Claude Makelele who was accused of beating up his former girlfriend.

Thandi Ojeer, who was in a relationship with the former Chelsea and Real Madrid star for two years, claimed he punched her at the home they once shared in Paris.

The 39-year-old, who is now deputy coach with French top flight side Paris Saint Germain, has denied her claims of violence.

Ojeer told the court that four month's after she split up with the 2006 World Cup finalist she visited his home after making numerous telephone calls in order to collect items belonging to her, worth an estimated 30,000 euros.

"Claude opened the door and I told him I just wanted to collect my clothes," she claimed. "He pushed me back, I caught onto him to prevent myself falling. He hit me in the face, I was stunned."

Makelele's lawyer Arnaud Pericard said his client had used "legitimate defence" during the alleged incident in 2010 during Paris fashion week.

"This woman entered the house without being invited so Mr Makelele defended himself and he was the one who called the police to prevent Miss Ojeer from entering. It's clearly a case of legitimate defence."

Makelele also lodged a complaint against Ojeer for trespass and violence. According to her lawyer, Stanislas Panon, this complaint "was not followed up".

Makelele was not in court on Thursday.

Sentence will be passed at a Versailles court on September 13.
