Fernando Torres howler joins ranks of worst misses

Oh, Fernando. Just when it looks like your stuttering Chelsea career has turned the corner, you go and miss an open goal... against Manchester United... at the Stretford End. [LNB]The Spaniard arguably enjoyed his best game for the Blues since his ?50million switch south from Liverpool, scoring with an exquisite chip over United goalkeeper David De Gea early in the second-half.  [LNB]But the match will be remembered for his incredible miss: after rounding De Gea, he looked certain to score from seven yards out, but shanked his shot embarrassingly wide.[LNB] On his knees: Torres' miss delights United fans in the Stretford End[LNB]But was it the worst miss ever? Certainly Torres will feel that way, but here's a selection of Sportsmail's favourite gaffes that may just top the howler against United...[LNB]Robert EarnshawRobert Earnshaw's astonishing miss, when he blazed over an open goal with 15 minutes left, allowed England to scrape a 1-0 victory over Wales in an uninspiring match at Wembley. [LNB]The 30-year-old striker is one man Wales would have banked on to tap the ball into the back of the net from six yards out. [LNB]Earnshaw admitted afterwards: 'There's absolutely no chance of me watching it (the miss) again.'[LNB][LNB]Ilija SivonjicDinamo Zagreb forward Ilija Sivonjic provides one of the most amusing misses when he appears to trap the ballon the line against HNK Cibalia in the Croatian Prva HNL league. [LNB][LNB]Kei KamaraOn par with Sivonjic's miss is Kansas City striker Kei Kamara who, after failing to put the ball in the back of the net with his feet from millimetres out, resorts to using his hands in a desperate last ditch attempt to save his blushes.   [LNB] [LNB]Khalfan FahadDefendingAsian Games champions Qatar crashed out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage after teenager Khalfan Fahad missed the easiest of open goal chances against Uzbekistan. [LNB]Fahad took advantage of a goalkeeping mistake before taking the ball closer to goal with the Qatar fans already celebrating a 20th-minute lead. [LNB] But much to their amazement, and everybody else's amusement, the young forward managed to miss the target and strike the upright of the post before a team-mate blasted over.  [LNB] [LNB]Chris IwelumoWhileEarnshaw narrowly missed out on Sportsmail's top five misses, Scotland's Chris Iwelumo has crept in with his incredible miss on, of all days, his debut. [LNB] The 33-year-old came on as a second half substitute in Scotland's 0-0 draw with Norway in a 2010 World Cup qualifier. The Scot could and should have netted the winner but got his feet all muddled up three yards from goal.    [LNB][LNB]VeriaAbizarre collection of misses by Greek team Veria in a league game against Levadeiakos, which they thankfully went on to win 1-0. [LNB]But the coach would have been fuming when three of his forwards missed five golden opportunities with the woodwork being hit three times beforea last effort clears the crossbar. [LNB] No prize for guessing what was top on the coach's list of training drills that week.
