Essien targets clean sweep

Michael Essien believes the quadruple could be on for Chelsea as they close in on four different pieces of silverware this season.

Ghana midfielder Essien has returned to Stamford Bridge following Africa Cup of Nations duty and is delighted that his team-mates have forced their way into contention in the Premier League, alongside keeping their runs in the FA and Carling Cups plus the Champions League alive.

Avram Grant's side has the opportunity to pick up their first trophy with a Carling Cup final meeting with Tottenham set for February 24, but Essien believes the squad has the character to be even more successful this season.

"We've got the character to win the quadruple," he told The Sun.

"This could still be a really big season for us. We're still in all four competitions and we will do everything to win as many of them as we can.

"Winning all four trophies is a possibility."
